Taking on the role of a gladiator was no small feat, as Paul quickly discovered. He was subjected to a demanding training schedule that included lifting heavy objects, running, and following a strict eating plan.

“I had a team of people around who were telling me what to eat and when, where to run, how far to run, and what heavy things to lift.”

Gaelic Football’s Role in Paul Mescal’s Gladiator II Prep!

Would he even be an Irishman if he didn’t credit his Gaelic football roots for landing the lead role in “Gladiator II”? In an interview with Vanity Fair, Paul mentioned that director Ridley Scott was initially impressed by his performance as Connell in “Normal People.” Their conversation lasted about “20 to 30 minutes” to get a sense of the film’s story.

However, their discussion took an interesting turn when they spent around ten minutes talking about Paul’s love for Gaelic football growing up.

“Maybe that was something that helped with it in that I’m used to being physical in my body.”

he said.

Ultimately, Paul’s combination of rigorous training, disciplined eating, and physical conditioning from his Gaelic football days helped him secure the role. We can’t wait to see what our Maynooth lad brings to the character of Lucius in “Gladiator II.”

The film promises to be a thrilling addition to Ridley Scott’s cinematic legacy, and with a cast as talented as this, it’s sure to be a hit. As Paul Mescal steps into the shoes of a gladiator, his dedication and hard work are sure to shine on the big screen come November.
